What is Tsugaru Lacquerware?
Tsugaru Lacquerware is traditional lacquerware produced in the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture, centered in Hirosaki City.
Inheriting the traditions of our ancestors and more than three hundred years of history, the four techniques of lacquering:Kara-nuri, Nanako-nuri, Monsa-nuri, and Nishiki-nuri have been handed down to the younger generation of craftsmen. They are still producing exquisite and robust lacquerware to this day.

In 1975, Tsugaru Lacquerware became the first lacquerware in Japan to be designated as a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, along with Aizu-nuri from Fukushima Prefecture and Wajima-nuri from Ishikawa Prefecture.
It is also the only traditional craft designated by the Minister of Aomori Prefecture to date, and is a representative traditional craft of Aomori Prefecture.

Characteristics of Tsugaru Lacquerware
The characteristic of Tsugaru Lacquerware is that it is hard and strong, very practical, and at the same time has a very elegant appearance. Tsugaru lacquerware is produced using a technique called "Togidashi Henshin-nuri," in which multiple layers of lacquer are applied and then polished to a smooth surface to create a pattern. Dozens of processes and more than two months are required to repeat this process, resulting in a complex and beautiful lacquer patterns, sturdiness, and solid feel of the furface.
